Every once in a while, even refined gentlemen need to get back to a simple life, where men took joy in the basics, like salty pork products, burning trash in your back yard and a Friday night at the dirt track.
Now you can do all of these things and more without leaving the confines of your audio space with the latest release from the unabashed hillbillies, Southern Culture on the Skids.
The Kudzu Ranch is a delightful platter of down home sashayin’ that should please both the learned and the SCOTS neophyte
The opening southern anthem, “Bone Dry Dirt,” unleashes a crunchy guitar riff that hangs in your head like a cheap bottle of beer mixed with powerful percussion and some extremely snappy sound mixing. So far, in my humbly stated opinion, the best track on the disc.
That’s not say there aren’t other tracks that will grab you like yer second cousin Lucy at the barn dance as the next few numbers mix it up with the powerful vocals of “the Huffinator,” Mary Huff on “it’s The Music That Makes Me,” and “Highlife.”
I’m also especially fond of the track, “Montague's Mystery Theme,” which conjures up some low vibrato guitar reminiscent of a good ‘ole creature feature soundtrack and the next time your neighbor gets uppity, be sure to crank up “My Neighbor Burns Trash,” to let everyone know how you feel.
Production work is crisp and tight and the band has a whole new tone to their sound and is an obvious progression for their work.
This is the highlife living in the gutter and a strongly suggested addition to your audio collection. Pop this in between some jazz at your next dinner soirée and shake up things a bit.
